What is Professional Coaching

“Coaching is like a reflective mirror, reflecting what you are thinking, feeling and saying. By working together, you will understand your own mirror and use it to become limitless”

Adapted from a quote by Sultan Alsasi

Professional coaching is a relatively new concept in Aotearoa New Zealand.  It is not life coaching, it is not counselling, it is not a consultative process, it is not supervision although it is an offshoot of supervision.

Professional coaching is a safe and confidential space to talk with a qualified coach about things related to your job and your work. Each session runs for an hour. Sessions can be one off, or regular sessions held, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or in a time frame mutually agreed upon.

Coaching provides the opportunity for you to:

  • offload and express personal responses and feelings that arise because of your work

  • provide opportunities to reflect on your work

  • ensure you are not left to carry, alone, difficulties and problems because of the work you do

  • deal with conflict, both personal and with colleagues

  • work through blockages and resistance

  • manage yourself in your role

  • be proactive rather than reactive

  • develop skills and strategies that allow you to be more effective in your role

  • receive feedback on your actions, approaches and behaviours

  • be validated and supported as a person and as a professional

  • ensure ethical, standards or value based work practices

My Approach

I take a non-directive approach to coaching and mentoring which is solutions focused and values based. That said, each situation is different, especially in a mentoring situation, where I may incorporate a directive approach if that is appropriate.....So what does all that actually mean??

Non Directive

With this approach, my role as a coach is to facilitate and guide you to form the solutions and conclusions that are the best fit for you and your situation.

I believe we each hold the answers within us, sometimes these are blocked as we are either too busy or emotionally involved in the situation.

My role is to coach you from an independent and impartial perspective, to identify opportunities and actions so you can move past the blockages.

Studies have shown the benefits of non-directive coaching are long lasting. When people are told to do something, only 10% are likely to recall it correctly after 3 months. If a person is given non-directive coaching, where they are guided to form their own solutions and conclusions, that number goes up to 95%.

Solutions Focus

This is a forward looking approach  focusing on finding solutions  which are specific and appropriate for you and your situation. This approach enables you to create a picture of your ideal future which incorporates your strengths and values, then making it a reality.

Values Based

A value is generally not something you choose but which is intrinsically important to you and which you consistently  prioritise in your life.   Values based coaching  recognises that understanding one’s values, lies at the heart of any personal or professional decisions.
